Arbor Day Celebrated Throughout The Region
The very first Arbor Day Celebration took place in Nebraska on April 10, 1872 and resulted in
the planting of an estimated 1 million trees! Today, Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. Founded
by J. Sterling Morton in 1872, it is celebrated on the last Friday in April.
California Arbor Day, which was begun in honor of the famed horticulturist Luther Burbank, is celebrated each year on
March 7 (Burbank’s birthday).
In 1907, Theodore Roosevelt said, It is well that you should celebrate your Arbor Day thoughtfully, for within your lifetime, the
nation's need for trees will become serious." In 2001, the Sacramento Tree
Foundation began work on its Greenprint Initiative with just this message in mind. As part of their commitment to the Greenprint Initiative, the 22 cities and 6 counties
in the Sacramento region celebrate the great tradition of Arbor Day each year. This year celebrations included:
On February 25, 2010, the City Council of
Citrus Heights presented a public proclamation, recognizing March 7, 2010 as
California Arbor Day.
In Yuba City
on March 2, 2010, students from Bridge Street Elementary School
visited Gauche Park in celebration of Arbor Day.
El Dorado County
honored Arbor Day with a proclamation at their
Board of Supervisors and City Council meetings on March 2, 2010.
On March 4, 2010, the City
of Sacramento and the County of Sacramento
celebrated California Arbor Day with a Sacramento Tree Foundation Founders Day
Planting at Memorial Auditorium.
On March 5, 2010, Roseville
conducted a ceremony at Hughes
Park proclaiming March 7,
2010 as California Arbor Day. The ceremony concluded with a planting of native
oak trees.
The City of Live
Oak planted a tree in memory of Al Fortino during its
California Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, March 6, 2010.
On March 11, 2010, Rancho Cordova
read their Arbor Day Proclamation and planted several trees at City Hall to
replace those damaged in a winter storm.
The City of Woodland collaborated with Woodland Tree Foundation for an Arbor Day tree planting on Saturday March 13, 2010
at Fern Park.
Elk Grove will celebrate
Arbor Day on April 10, 2010 with a proclamation and by planting 250 new oak trees along Laguna
Creek.
On April 17, 2010, Placer County and Supervisor Rocky Rockholm are organizing a tree planting
in partnership with the Roseville City Utility Exploration Center.
In celebration of Arbor Day, Folsom will
be planting 50 native trees at the new Hinkle Creek Nature Center on April 24,
2010.
Loomis is organizing a tree-planting event April 17, 2010 and hosts
their official Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration on April 24, 2010.
In Wheaton, students from St. John Lutheran School,
the City's Forestry Division, and City officials will celebrate Arbor Day at Adams Park
with a tree planting ceremony on April 25, 2010.
West Sacramento will
celebrate Arbor Day with a big event on May 1, 2010 in Patwin Park.
The Sacramento Tree

Ranch Nursery, and the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District for sponsoring
our Arbor Day Celebrations with free trees for the Greenprint
communities.
